Ten (More) Must-Have Supplies for Law School

Updated: Feb 20

Thanks to all the great feedback, here are ten more supplies to help you kick law school's ass!

Number 1: Book stand

Honestly, I don't know how I left this off the first time. I used a book stand every. single. day. throughout law school and studying for the bar, as did the majority of my friends and classmates. There's several different options out there. Here are few, including the exact one I used:

Number 2: Laptop stand

This is such a good one! I didn't get one until my 3L year and wish I would've gotten it sooner. Here's a few options:

Number 3: Post-It Tabs

Y'all. I'm willing to bet I used over 1,000 of these in law school and still use them in practice today when I'm marking important documents or case law. I always kept some in my backpack, locker, and desk at home.

Number 4: Backpack

This is really a no-brainer, but I promise you will not be able to get away with some cute tote bag as a 1L. Or really ever. I always use a backpack. Even if you have a locker at school, you will need to take your books to class and also home to study every day. You need a sturdy backpack that will not only support your books, but also your back.

I carried this backpack by The North Face throughout law school and it served me well. This option is also great if you want more colors to chose from. If you don't care about brand names, this is a highly reviewed, budget-friendly option.

Number 5: Sticky Notes

Like the sticky tabs, I used TONS of these. I would read and use sticky notes to jot quick notes about what was on that page and stick it on the page so I wasn't writing in my books, only highlighting. These are also great for reminders! I would write a to-do list every morning and stick it on my laptop.

I also used these bigger ones when studying for the bar to write down rules and stick them on my home office wall. These sticky easel pads are also great when studying for finals, especially if you don't have/want to use a white board.

Number 6: Binders

I used one-inch binders to compile my notes for each class throughout the semester. I would type my reading notes, print them off for class (most of my professors didn't allow computers), and hand-write my class notes on my reading notes. I would then put those notes in a binder specifically for that class. If you like this note-taking concept, I would also recommend a 3-hole punch.

Number 7: Pencil Bag

I know, this seems very elementary. But I promise that if you don't have one, you'll lose all those highlighters and pens.

Number 8: Extra Laptop Charger

I can't tell you how many times I would forget my charger at home and need it halfway through the day. I finally bought a spare that I kept in my backpack. I HIGHLY recommend doing the same:

  • For my PC gals with USB-C plugs, here's the exact one I use. I now leave this at the office and have the one that came with my computer at home. This is another great option that comes with a variety of adapters.

  • Here's a back-up MacBook charger if you prefer Apple.

Number 9: Extra Phone/Earbud/Headphone Charging Cords

Just like the laptop, you'll get to school only to realize you left a charger at home and you're going to be there all day.

Number 10: Wireless Keyboard and Mouse

If you opt for the laptop stand, you'll need a wireless mouse and keyboard. This is the exact one I used all through law school.

BONUS!

Computer monitor! This is a GAME CHANGER, especially when doing research or drafting outlines. Here are a few options, regardless of the type of laptop you have:
